“For the piece, I laid down a base collage of unsurpising materials: images from a magazine (I think), with solid-color construction paper. On top of that, I glued down individual words cut out from a quote from the poem "The Chambered Nautilus" by Oliver Wendell Holmes.
The words have been placed according to the "cut up" technique formulated by the Dada artist and writer Tristan Tzara. His directions were to select a text, cut out every word separately, mix them up, then draw them one at a time and set them down as they are drawn, according to chance, and boom: you have a new dadaist poem. David Bowie and William S. Burroughs are known for having used this method to generate lyrics and prose.”
